Education: postgraduate studies guide: Literature Review

This guide is intended for all postgraduate students under the School of Education.

What is a literature review

A literature review refers to an examination of academic sources about a particular subject matter. It gives you a comprehensive understanding of the present knowledge, enabling you to recognise relevant theories, methodologies, and areas of inadequacy in the current research that you can employ later in your paper, thesis, or dissertation topic (Combes 2023),

Conducting your literature review

It's time to start looking for your literature review once you've decided on your search concepts and terms. Before considering citation searching, we advise you to conduct a search utilising a pertinent subject database.

Increasing your ability to look for literature will enable you to:

  • Create a targeted search to locate pertinent data on a subject.
  • Examine several facets of a subject.
  • Save time and search more effectively.
  • Don't forget to reference your sources
